Type Locality and Naming

Turpan Basin. The Subashi Formation was erected by Bahatehan in 1980. The section for the designation at the Dongtaizi Village of the Shanshan County of Xinjiang.


Lithology and Thickness

The lower part of the Subashi Formation is represented by gray white and dark gray conglomerate and brown, brown red and gray white medium- coarse-grained sandstone with brown red sandy mudstone. The Subashi Formation is 215 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base of the formation marked by gray white and dark gray conglomerate lies unconformably on the underlying Kumutake Fm.

Upper contact

The top marked by brown sandy mudstone is distinguished from brown red conglomerate of the Paleogene Taizicun Fm, showing a conformable contact with the latter.

Regional extent

The present formation mainly occurs in the Huoyanshan and Shanshan areas of the Turpan basin of Xinjiang. It is quite persistent in lithology and increases in thickness from west to east, from 163 to 215 m in thickness.

Fossils

In Lianmuqin, it yields Reptilia Shanshanosaurus huoyanshanensis, Tarbosaurus sp., Nemegtosaurus pachi, Ankylsauria sp., Oolithes spheroides, Mongolimys turfanensis, etc. It also yields ostracods Cypridea mosuowanensis, Talicypridea amoena, T. gemma, and T. retusa.
